A soon-to-be dedicated shrine at the Locus Benedictus Retreat Area in west Greenwood is in the final stages of completion. The shrine’s centerpiece is a marble statue of the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus. On Sept. 7, the Most Rev. Joseph Kopacz, bishop of the Diocese of Jackson, will lead a Mass at the shrine, which will be known as "Mary Mother of the Delta.”

For almost two years, the Locus Benedictus Retreat Area in west Greenwood has served as a quiet retreat from a hurried world.

At 6 p.m. on Sept. 7, the Most Rev. Joseph Kopacz, bishop of the Diocese of Jackson, will lead a Mass including a procession, blessing and dedication of an outside shrine near the retreat’s Chapel of Mercy.

Mrs. Narcis E. Horton had seen a lot of changes in her 108 years.

She lived through the presidencies of nine U.S. presidents from Theodore Roosevelt to Barack Obama, experienced World War I and World War II, as well as the Korean, Vietnam and Gulf wars, and saw the struggle for civil rights.

City to hold employee picnic
