There will be plenty of food and fun at Friday’s ninth annual City of Greenwood Employee Appreciation Picnic.
The event is scheduled to begin at noon at Whittington Park. In the event of in-clement weather, it will be held at the Leflore County Agri-Center.
“This is to show our employees our appreciation for all that they do for the city,” said Ward 4 City Council member Charles McCoy, who has spearheaded the picnics from the beginning.
No city funds are being used to put on the picnic; corporate and private donations cover the costs. All seven City Council members and Mayor Carolyn McAdams donated.
Of the many sponsors, McCoy said he was especially thankful to Cannon Motor Co. for helping to supply about 370 T-shirts for the employees.
“Charles works really hard at getting our sponsors,” McAdams said. “We cannot use city funds. If it wasn’t for those sponsors, we wouldn’t be able to do it.”
The mayor said the city employees are hard-working and dedicated, and “it is wonderful that we can show them some appreciation.”
Inflatables will be in the park for kids, and prizes will be awarded throughout the day. DJ Killer Miller will be providing the music.
Ward 1’s Johnny Jennings said he’s heard compliments from people who lived in Greenwood and have come back for reunions and other events. “They’re so impressed how tidy and thriving Greenwood is,” and a lot of that recognition should go to the city employees, he said.
