Leflore County High School’s Tavarus Addison battles with a player from West Union High School for a rebound during Monday night’s MHSAA Class 1A state semifinals at the Mississippi Coliseum. Addison and the Tigers defeated the Eagles 53-48 and will face Calhoun City in the state championship game at noon Friday at the Big House.

JACKSON — The Leflore County Tigers will play for a state championship Friday.
The Tigers held off a pesky West Union squad to claim a 53-48 win over the Eagles in the MHSAA State 1A semifinals Monday night at the Mississippi Coliseum.

Supervisors updated on storm debris cleanup

A lack of a quorum during Monday’s Leflore County Board of Supervisors meeting meant no action could be taken on agenda items.
District 1’s Sam Abraham and District 3’s Anjuan Brown were the only two of the county’s five supervisors who showed up at the courthouse for the regularly scheduled board meeting.

Greenwood falls in Class 4A semifinals

JACKSON — Greenwood High School had its chances to stay on track for another state title but fell short in the end, losing 50-42 to Leake Central here Tuesday in the MHSAA State 4A semifinals at the Mississippi Coliseum.

GHS trailed the entire game but was always within striking distance.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
