    Carroll Academy’s baseball team claimed a 10-0 six-inning win over visiting Kirk Academy Friday night in Carrollton.
    The Rebels plated one run each in the second and fourth innings and four runs each in the third and sixth. They outhit Kirk 11-1 and took advantage of three Kirk errors and nine walks issued by the Raiders.

    Solid defense, good pitching and timely hitting are the ingredients to winning baseball games.
    Mississippi Valley State University did all three over the weekend, as the Diamond Delta Devils pulled off a sweep of visiting Alabama A&M in Southwestern Athletic Conference play at Magnolia Field in Itta Bena.

    Man charged with murder

    The U.S. Marshals Service arrested a 21-year-old Cruger man and charged him with first-degree murder Tuesday.
    Zaveion Owens, who’s also being held for authorities in Shelby County, Tennessee, was in custody at the Leflore County Jail as of Tuesday.

    Longtime tax assessor will step down

    After 26 years as Leflore County’s tax assessor, Leroy Ware will be stepping down from the role soon.
    On Monday, the Leflore County Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 to accept Ware’s letter of resignation. His last day on the job will be April 30.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
