Mrs. Narcis E. Horton had seen a lot of changes in her 108 years.
She lived through the presidencies of nine U.S. presidents from Theodore Roosevelt to Barack Obama, experienced World War I and World War II, as well as the Korean, Vietnam and Gulf wars, and saw the struggle for civil rights.
Mrs. Horton died of heart failure Thursday, Aug. 18, 2016, at Golden Age Nursing Home.
A native of Grenada County, Mrs. Horton was born on Oct. 7, 1907. She was a homemaker.
Throughout her life, Mrs. Horton was a hard worker, according to her daughter, Estella Pitchford: “She was a role model for all of us.”
Early on, Mrs. Horton was employed as a cook at the former Greenwood Leflore Hospital on River Road, Pitchford said.
For most of her later years, Mrs. Horton could vividly remember things from her distant past, Pitchford said.
After being cared for by her daughters, Mrs. Horton was moved to Golden Age three years ago. She was an active member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses of Greenwood for many years.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses of Greenwood.
Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Friday at Great Southern Funeral Home.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Horton; and four children, Beetta Smith, C.L. Battist, Earnestine Farrah and Gilbert Watson.
Mrs. Horton is survived by two other daughters, Zilpha Woods and Jessie Polk, both of Greenwood; six generations of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
