Many children enjoy fishing rodeo at Mississippi Valley State

Saturday’s overcast skies didn’t dampen the enthusiasm at the third annual Kids Fishing Rodeo at Mississippi Valley State University.

Monica Coleman, 11, of Itta Bena, a veteran of the rodeo, was lucky; she caught two tagged catfish, which guaranteed her special fishing-related prizes.

Park making slow progress

The pavilion at Greenwood’s Rail Spike Park is slowly going up.

The metal structure at the intersection of Johnson and Main streets is the centerpiece of the $2.1 million linear park, which runs from Lamar Street to U.S. 82 along the former Columbus & Greenville Railway rail bed.

After Dr. Ilean Richards had a chance to review scores from the 2015-2016 Mississippi Assessment Program, she had mixed emotions.

“You know I’m not happy when the data tells us that we are not where we ought to be,” said Richards, the conservator of the Leflore County School District since January.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.
