Board OKs use of park for car show

A young man is a step closer to finalizing the big plans he has for an Itta Bena car show.

The Leflore County Board of Supervisors gave Walter Parker Jr., 23, permission to use a park in Itta Bena for the Itta Bena Second Annual Car Show Fest on Sept. 25 from noon to 7 p.m.

Store owner offers reward in burglary

The owner of Swider Electric is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of whoever burglarized his business.

David Swider said about $10,000 worth of merchandise had been stolen, probably Sunday night. The business is on U.S. 82 in Carroll County.

Ulysses Kelly has been volunteering his skills as a carpenter to the Greenwood Mentoring Group at the new Jessie B. Henderson-Inez Beck Learning Center. Kelly said the learning center could be completed by the end of summer.

Mentoring site may be done soon

With community support, the Greenwood Mentoring Group may finish its new facility by the end of summer.

The Jessie B. Henderson-Inez Beck Learning Center, located at 200 Ave. G, will be a multi-purpose facility. Bill Clay, executive director, said it will be an extension into the community.

Church unveils ' High Seas' set for VBS

The Immanuel Baptist Church in Greenwood is praying for good turnout this week during their Vacation Bible School.

Earl Collett, a member of the church, said that members of the congregation have been working on the set for the past several months.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
