The Immanuel Baptist Church in Greenwood is praying for good turnout this week during their Vacation Bible School.
Earl Collett, a member of the church, said that members of the congregation have been working on the set for the past several months.
The set, which fits the “High Seas” theme of the Bible school, is an elaborate styrofoam-based recreation of a wooden pirate ship cut, formed, burned and painted by members of the church.
“It took a while but we think it turned out well,” Collett said.
Collett added that churches interested in the set are welcome to borrow it after Immanuel’s Bible school this week.
The Bible school starts on Monday and runs from 5:45 p.m. until about 8:30 p.m. Gina Goetzinger, the VBS director, said that the students would be learning while having fun throughout the week.
“One of our activities is where we shoot an object off their head using air,” she said. “The lesson is that like God, you may not be able to see the air, but it’s there.”
She said the primary daily themes are that God’s word is true, comforting, surprising and life-changing.
On Friday, the final day of the Bible study, family members are asked to attend the finale VBS event.
“We want everyone to know that we welcome everyone,” Goetzinger said. “We would like to see as many people who want to come be there.”
She said that parents who want to bring their children are welcome to stop by and register them on the day of the event. Daily attendance is not necessary and participants can join in throughout the week.
Goetzinger said that signs would mark drop-off and pick-up points for the parents.
“Vacation Bible school is a community outreach program for the church,” she said. “Kids that leave can take the message with them and share God’s word.”
