Consent decree suit gets go-ahead

A judge has ruled that state Sen. David Jordan may proceed with an intervention into a consent decree signed by the Leflore County Election Commission and Mississippi Republican Party over a lawsuit involving county elections.

The victim of a shooting Monday afternoon near Crosstown Grocery on Main Street was in stable condition this morning.

Michael Darby was shot four times Monday afternoon. He was struck twice in the stomach and once in the upper chest, and one shot grazed his neck, said Huntley Nevels, deputy chief of police.

The Mitchell Springs Teoc Cemetery was dedicated Saturday morning. Bill McCain deeded the property to the descendants of the family buried there, which includes people who were slaves on the Teoc plantation.

Descendants of slaves unveil monument

TEOC — Descendants of slaves who worked a Teoc plantation unveiled a monument Saturday marking the cemetery where their family members are buried.

William “Bill” McCain of Greenwood deeded the land to the family. The new cemetery, Mitchell Springs Teoc Cemetery, was named and dedicated Saturday.

Itta Bena boil-water notice still in effect

Itta Bena Mayor Walter Parker says residents are still advised to boil their water, though he says he is drinking from the tap.

The town has been under a boil water advisory for more than a week. Parker said it’s just a precautionary measure until water samples are returned.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
