Farmer Long dies at 67

Will Long, known by some as the consummate “Southern gentleman farmer,” passed away Saturday after suffering a head injury.

His daughter, Jenny Long, said he was taken to the hospital after a head injury, but the injury coupled with a blood disorder could not be treated in time.

Mr. Long was 67.

Owner Margaret Rinicker said her goal when she opened the store was to provide healthy products for area residents.

Health fair in Itta Bena focuses on awareness

Samuel Chapel United Methodist Church in Itta Bena hosted a fair Friday to try to increase health literacy.

Gladys Fant, the chairperson for health ministries at the church, said the purpose of the fair was to provide important information to area residents.

A Webb man was arrested on at least 11 charges Friday afternoon in Leflore County after attempting to evade an officer.

Deniro Scurrlock, 25, was arrested near Schlater after officers attempted to pull him over for a traffic violation.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
