Burglary suspect turned on light, fled

An alleged burglar left a Cypress Avenue home emptyhanded after he turned on a light, alerting the residents sleeping inside to his presence.

The man got away after the Jan. 10 burglary in the 500 block of Cypress Avenue, but Greenwood police arrested Marcus Williams, 18, 1100 Yazoo St., Thursday.

Dad must pay $13,000 in back child support

A Greenwood father will have to pay $100 extra on his regular child support payment until he catches up on a $13,000 backlog.

Leflore County Circuit Judge Richard Smith sentenced Marcus Johnson, 32, on Monday after he pleaded guilty to felony non-support of a child, Attorney General Jim Hood said in a press release.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
