An 18-year-old from Greenwood is getting a second chance after accidentally killing a friend, but he’ll have to work for it.
Leflore County Circuit Judge Betty Sanders sentenced Tyshun Deuntae Lucas, 18, 1027 Russell Ave., to five years Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to manslaughter, but the sentence will be suspended upon completion of the Mississippi Department of Corrections’ Regimented Inmate Discipline program.
“It’s a military-style boot camp that they have for MDOC where they put youthful offenders,” said Tim Jones, assistant district attorney.
Lucas had faced up to 20 years in prison.
He was 17 when he shot Antron McGee, 22, through the seat of a car in October 2010. Lucas was riding in the back seat cocking a gun when it went off, striking McGee, the driver, in the back, Jones said. McGee died a few hours later at Greenwood Leflore Hospital.
Police arrested Lucas after hospital security personnel observed him in the waiting room with something in his pockets. Officers found several 9mm cartridges when they searched him. A 9mm weapon killed McGee, and officers recovered a black 9mm pistol from some bushes outside the hospital near the Yazoo River.
