Police surround hospital after false shooting report

Greenwood police officers and Leflore County Sheriff’s deputies surrounded Greenwood Leflore Hospital this evening after a false report of a shooting and an active shooter at the hospital.

“There is not an active shooter at the hospital,” Mayor Carolyn McAdams told the Commonwealth by telephone.

2 men charged with drug offenses, others

The Greenwood Police Department is continuing its investigation into two men charged with numerous offenses Wednesday night.

According to Greenwood Police Chief Ray Moore, officers pulled over a sport-utility vehicle and discovered the vehicle, driven by Christopher A. Gentry, 21, 1806 Highland Ave., had a strong smell of marijuana.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
