Johnson concerned about conditions at Threadgill

The condition of Threadgill Elementary School is of “great concern,” Mary Johnson, superintendent of the Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School District, told the school board Wednesday.
During a board work session, Johnson shared details of a formal walkthrough of the school that was conducted May 19.

All about the guitar: National museum director likes being in Delta

The National Guitar Museum has displayed the history and art of the guitar for more than a decade with touring exhibitions across America and making trips to Australia, Canada and New Zealand.
Its next stop will be in Greenwood at the Museum of the Mississippi Delta, the 63rd unique museum to house an exhibition during their travels.

Big Sand Farmers Market began at its new location Thursday evening at the North Carrollton Industrial Park. “We are proud to have the farmers market here, and there are plans for more events at the industrial park,” North Carrollton Mayor Ken Strachan said. The town has requested more than $5.2 million in congressional appropriations for a multipurpose building, a senior citizen center and a safe room on the more-than-20-acre site.

Big Sand market open

The Big Sand Farmers Market kicked off its 2025 season Thursday at a new location in Carroll County.
The market, now held at the old North Carrollton Industrial Park, is open from 5:30 to 7 p.m each Thursday through August.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
