60 from LCHS to graduate Friday

Sixty seniors at Leflore County High School will celebrate their graduation Friday.
The school’s ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. at Mississippi Valley State University’s R.W. Harrison Complex.
Sarah Spells is the class valedictorian, and the salutatorian is Ja’Niya Terry.

New head of LCS glad to return to education field

The new head of school at Leflore Christian School is a longtime educator hoping to make an impact in his hometown and beyond.
Tim Burton, a 56-year-old Greenwood native, started his educational career at Cruger-Tchula Academy and then moved to Pillow Academy, where he spent 22 years in teaching, coaching and administrative positions.

155 set to graduate from GHS Thursday

One hundred and fifty-five Greenwood High School seniors will graduate Thursday, celebrating the end of their high school careers.
Greenwood High’s graduation ceremony is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Mississippi Valley State University’s R.W. Harrison Complex.

Delta Health Alliance hosted a hiring fair Monday for the Summer Youth Corps program, allowing students within the Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School District to receive six-week paid summer internships.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
