Itta Bena’s new mayor, board to be sworn in

Dr. Mary Tyes-Williams will be sworn in next week as the new mayor of Itta Bena.
Her opponent, incumbent Mayor Reginald Freeman, missed Monday’s deadline to contest the election.
Freeman, who was seeking a second term, lost the June 3 election by three votes. Tyes-Williams received 198 votes to Freeman’s 195.

Learning life skills: Boys ministry includes Bible study, community service, group activities

Lions for Lambs, a ministry of Locus Benedictus that aims to mentor boys in the community, has recently completed its second year of service.
The free ministry runs from August to May and ties together Bible study with community service and group activities.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
