Arthur E. Chadwick, an American orchid grower and entrepreneur who has presented namesake orchids to first ladies and who recently met the United Kingdom’s Queen Camilla, was the guest speaker Thursday for a garden event held in Greenwood.

Tyes-Williams elected Itta Bena mayor; Freeman intends to review ballot boxes

Dr. Mary Tyes-Williams has been elected mayor of Itta Bena by three votes — but her opponent, incumbent Reginald Freeman, says he will ask to inspect the ballot boxes.
Tyes-Williams, 54, came out ahead of Freeman, 39, who was seeking a second term. Tyes-Williams received 198 votes to Freeman’s 195.

City recycling director chosen for state board

Darwin Greene, director of recycling for the city of Greenwood, has been appointed to the board of directors of the Mississippi Recycling Coalition.
“It’s just an honor to be able to represent Greenwood,” Greene said.
The nonprofit organization is based in in Jackson and aims to promote and grow recycling efforts across the state.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
