Marker unveiled: Families gather to remember lost servicemen

A new memorial marker was welcomed Saturday by the relatives and loved ones of 16 servicemen killed in a plane crash in Itta Bena eight years ago.
The families and members of the community joined together at the YANKY 72 memorial across U.S. 82 from Mississippi Valley State University to witness the unveiling of the Gold Star Memorial.

Leflore County Board of Supervisors: Restructuring of loan could save money

Employee helps brighten up Fincher’s

Fincher’s, which is on the corner of Howard and West Washington streets, was burglarized June 21.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
