Schools lag behind state on tests

Area schools continue to fall short of the state averages of test scores, according to recently released data from the Mississippi Department of Education.

Itta Bena board approves hiring part-time deputy clerk

The Itta Bena Board of Aldermen has approved hiring a part-time deputy clerk to balance the workload and help the city catch up on audits.
Debra Martin, a former state employee, was approved to fill the position Tuesday. She will join Iretha Franklin, the full-time deputy clerk, and will be trained by Barbara Applon, city clerk.

Supervisors look at 2 proposals for budget

The Leflore County Board of Supervisors reviewed two versions of a proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year at a work session Monday.
Three supervisors attended the meeting at the courthouse to discuss the county’s 2025-26 budget. District 2’s Reginald Moore and District 3’s Anjuan Brown were absent.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
