Shooting of activist Kirk sparks calls for more civility

The assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk should encourage American citizens to look inward and reflect on their values, according to two area leaders of Republican committees.
Kirk, an ally of President Donald Trump, was shot and killed Wednesday while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University.

Fish fry fundraiser for library will be held Monday

The Friends of the Greenwood-Leflore Public Library will host its 10th annual fish fry fundraiser on Monday.
The fundraiser will be held in the parking lot of Greenwood Market Place from 4 to 6:30 p.m. The plates will be prepared by Larry’s Fish House and will each include four fillets, fries, hushpuppies and coleslaw.

Bulldogs take down GHS

Greenwood High School built an early lead Friday night against Greenville High School and never looked back, with Cary Weaver earning his first win as interim head coach.
The Bulldogs claimed a 37-6 home victory with big outings from Tavares Osborne and Jawuan Gideon.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
