Linda Osbourne’s years of hard work are coming to fruition Friday night with the opening of her sports bar, The Blue Magnolia, at 117 Howard St.
Osbourne once managed Joe’s Place on Carrollton Avenue. This year she began working toward opening her own place instead of just managing for someone else.

Librarian for children, youth leaving state

The Greenwood-Leflore Public Library system will be losing a familiar face at the end of this week. Haley Lewis, who has served as the children’s and young adult librarian since last July, is moving to Arizona.

Joyce Chiles, revered local attorney, dies at age 67

Attorney Joyce Chiles, 67, died Thursday morning at North Sunflower Medical Center following a battle with lung cancer, Sunflower County Coroner Heather Burton said.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Pitts Memorial Gardens in Itta Bena.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
