Campaigns for the District 3 seat on the Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School Board are going well, candidates say.
The incumbent, Samantha Milton, will face Henry Fant and Anglean Wardell in the Nov. 8 election.
Milton said she has been going door to door and placing signs around town. As far as public engagement, she said, “I just expect the public to look at what I’ve already accomplished.”
Fant said he also has been knocking on doors. In addition, he said, “We are attending a lot of churches on Sundays. That’s how this plan is going right now, and we’re going to get involved in community meetings, try to get by to the (Greenwood) Voters League.”
Fant said he is planning to visit his next church in a couple of weeks. He is also hoping to score a Wednesday segment for “Let’s Talk” on WGNL sometime.
Both Milton and Fant said they are open to a forum in which they and Wardell can tell the public what they offer to voters.
Wardell said that she is just beginning to get her signs together but that her campaign is “coming along.” “I’m just meeting people in my district and letting them get to know me,” she said.
The main issue she has heard about from voters concerns the prospect of a bond issue to build at least one new school.
“People want to know what happened to the bond issue and why we have not been given the opportunity to decide if we want a bond,” she said.
The school board had conducted surveys, held several meetings and heard from architects to come up with a plan for a possible bond issue, but little publicly has happened on the matter in the past year.
Wardell also expressed a willingness to appear with other candidates to speak to potential constituents. “If they set it up, I’ll be right there,” she said.
