Greenwood-area children will have an opportunity to earn cash by reading books this summer.

The Junior Auxiliary of Greenwood will hold its annual Bucks for Books reading program throughout June at the Greenwood-Leflore Public Library.

45 to graduate from LCHS

Leflore County High School will hold its graduation ceremony for the Class of 2019 on Monday.

The event will be held at 7 p.m. at the R.W. Harrison Complex on the campus of Mississippi Valley State University in Itta Bena.

Members of Greenwood Garden Club will showcase their talents in an upcoming flower show.

“We the People,” a patriotic-themed standard National Garden Clubs flower show, will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, at the Post 29 American Legion.

The event is free and open to the public.

54 George students to graduate Friday

Fifty-four seniors will graduate from J.Z. George High School on Friday.

The commencement ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. in the school’s gymnasium.

The J.Z. George Class of 2019 valedictorian is Michael Athan Shute, who finished with a 94.27 average. JaKayla Phillips is salutatorian with a 93.56 average.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
