Greenwood-area children will have an opportunity to earn cash by reading books this summer.
The Junior Auxiliary of Greenwood will hold its annual Bucks for Books reading program throughout June at the Greenwood-Leflore Public Library.
“JA aims to foster a love for reading and continue to keep children engaged in literature throughout the summer by earning money for books read,” said Kelsie Tribble, Junior Auxiliary president.

Registration will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday on the second floor of the library. Those who are unable to attend can still register on any of the report days. Participants must bring their most recent report card.
The summertime program is open to students who will be in grades 1-6 for the next school year.
The 2019 theme is “Wild About Reading.”
“We hope that by the end of the summer everyone is ‘Wild About Reading,’” said Tribble.
Bucks for Books provides financial incentives to encourage elementary-age children to read during the summer break from school. Children earn cash by reading books and making oral reports on designated days.
Students should read grade-level books, and each participant will be asked to tell a Junior Auxiliary member about the stories he or she has read. Reports on books read will be taken from 9 to 11:30 a.m. each Monday, Wednesday and Friday throughout June. Verbal reports help JA members to check for understanding, and they also keep track of money earned through the month.
Junior Auxiliary will hold an “End of Summer” party on June 28, where money will be awarded and special prizes given to the top readers.
“As Junior Auxiliary members, we look forward to Bucks for Books each year,” said Tribble. “It is as exciting for us as it is for the children, and we love to see them grow in their love for reading throughout the summer.”
Incoming first- and second-graders can earn up to $1 per book and report on five books per day. Incoming third- and fourth-graders can earn up to $2 per book and report on four books per day. Incoming fifth- and sixth-graders can earn up to $4 per book and report on three books per day.
Children are asked to check out no more than five books at a time.
Junior Auxiliary of Greenwood is also announcing that it will be introducing the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program to Leflore County. The program delivers free books to the homes of registered children from birth to age 5. A sign-up station for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library will be available at the Bucks for Books registration day. Registration is also available online at the Imagination Library website, imaginationlibrary.com.
“As always, Junior Auxiliary of Greenwood is looking forward to another opportunity to serve the children of Leflore County and celebrate their accomplishments,” said Tribble.
