The town of Schlater is gearing up for its annual community celebration and reunion Saturday.

Twinkle, twinkle, little stars

Six-month-old twins with Carroll County ties will be making their big screen debut next year.

Scarlett Jo and Summer Lynn Atkinson went to Jackson recently to film a couple of scenes for “The Hollars.”

The twins’ mother is Marcie McClain Atkinson, a Carroll County native and 2000 graduate of Carroll Academy.

A bullied breed

Pit bulls are a dog breed surrounded by controversy.

Some consider the dogs dangerous or even deadly. This belief has prompted 31 Mississippi counties and municipalities — including Greenwood, Leflore County and Carroll County — to pass laws regulating the breed. Twelve places have banned pit bulls altogether.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
