Minister known for wit, heart

The Rev. Bob Hatzfeld was known for his gentle smile, his sharp wit and his generous heart, friends said today.

A study released Tuesday shows significant hurdles facing black women and children across the rural South.

The study conducted by the Southern Black Women’s Initiative, an arm of the Children’s Defense Fund, was presented at a press conference at the Leflore County Civic Center.

Holiday Open House starts Thursday trolley ride included

The Christmas shopping season gets under way Thursday with the 2015 Yuletide Trolley Ride and Holiday Open House, which runs through Saturday.

Trolley rides begin at 5 p.m. Thursday and run through 8 p.m. The annual event is sponsored by the Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce.

Area events to honor veterans

Several events intended to honor the courage and sacrifice of America’s veterans are set to take place Wednesday.

Pillow Academy will hold its annual Veterans Day program at 9 a.m. at the school’s Craig Performing Arts Center, according to Jane-Hart Hargett, the program’s coordinator.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
