Several events intended to honor the courage and sacrifice of America’s veterans are set to take place Wednesday.
Pillow Academy will hold its annual Veterans Day program at 9 a.m. at the school’s Craig Performing Arts Center, according to Jane-Hart Hargett, the program’s coordinator.
All veterans are invited to attend the program, which is expected to last about 30 minutes.
Connie Black will perform “The Star Spangled Banner,” at the opening of the program.
This year’s keynote speaker is Greenwood Mayor Carolyn McAdams.
A military medley will be performed by the school’s fourth- and fifth-graders.
Another program, conducted by the Carroll Academy Student Council Association, sponsored as the Douglas Carroll Junior American Citizens, will take place at 10 a.m. on the courthouse grounds in Carrollton.
American Legion Post 200 will be holding its annual Veterans Day Parade beginning at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Robert Beasley, the post’s parade coordinator, said the bands that will be participating this year include ones from Greenwood High School, Greenwood Middle School, Mississippi Valley State University and Mississippi Delta Community College.
“It’s growing bigger every year. We’re establishing partnerships with surrounding communities,” Beasley said.
He said next year’s parade will be even more grand.
“This year, I got started a little late,” Beasley said.
