Salvation Army kettle campaign exceeds goal

The Greenwood Salvation Army has exceeded its goal for this year’s kettle campaign by almost 25 percent.

This year’s campaign, which ended on Christmas Eve, brought in $62,451.29, said Capt. Benjamin Deuel, corps officer. The goal was $50,000.

Kwanzaa celebration set for Sunday

Sidon Bible Fellowship Church will have a program Sunday in observance of Kwanzaa, a weeklong celebration of West African culture.

The 90-minute program will be held at 2 p.m. at the church, located at 200 School St.

The Rev. George Stanberry, pastor of the church, said this is the 11th such event held at the church.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
