Sidon Bible Fellowship Church will have a program Sunday in observance of Kwanzaa, a weeklong celebration of West African culture.
The 90-minute program will be held at 2 p.m. at the church, located at 200 School St.
The Rev. George Stanberry, pastor of the church, said this is the 11th such event held at the church.
“We usually have a real good turnout. It’s caught on,” he said.
For the second year in a row, James Poe, general manager of WABG radio, will serve as master of ceremonies.
“We have a special presentation each year by James Lehaman Jr. and his group from Jackson State University as well as music and an explanation of African traditions. Also this year, we will feature Helen Sims, ‘the great storyteller,’ from Belzoni,” Stanberry said.
This year’s keynote speaker is Dr. Douglas R. Evans, founding director of the National Afrikan-Amerikan Reunion Association, a nonprofit group designed to strengthen the American family.
Evans, originally from Dallas, recently relocated to Mound Bayou in order to work with youth and families in the Mississippi Delta.
A veteran of World War II and Vietnam, Evans will speak on life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness in America.
“We would like for the community to come out and observe the program,” Stanberry said. “I’m sure they would go away from this program with a different understanding.”
