District to seek pre-K grant

The Greenwood School Board voted Thursday to apply for a grant that would help expand pre-kindergarten services in the Greenwood Public School District.

Indoor sports, including volleyball and basketball, will enjoy a whole new feel at the renovated R.W. Harrison HPER Complex. A digitized score board, digitized classrooms and new state-of-the-art workout areas are part of the $17.5 million renovation project. A ribbon-cutting ceremony at Valley on Saturday will celebrate the completion of work on the complex.

Valley to unveil renovated HPER

The R.W. Harrison Health, Physical Education and Recreation Complex at Mississippi Valley State University will celebrate its renovation and re-opening this weekend with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The MVSU Department of Athletics will host the ribbon-cutting event from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Under a setting sun, Bishop Joseph Kopacz of the Catholic Diocese of Jackson blesses the statue of Mary and the Christ child during Wednesday’s dedication of the shrine to Mary, Mother of the Delta, at the Locus Benedictus retreat area. The marble statue was originally created in 1953 by Italian sculptor Armondo Battelli and was relocated to Greenwood from a church that had closed in Jackson.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
