Council chooses new members of various commissions, city clerk

The Greenwood City Council voted Tuesday to appoint new members to four city commissions as well as a new city clerk.
Thomas Gregory and Allison Pillow were appointed to the Greenwood Planning Commission, and Emily Roush Elliott was appointed to the Greenwood Housing Authority.

Brandon man charged with 3 burglaries

A Brandon man has been charged with three commercial burglaries in Greenwood this month and is being investigated for several more.
Jimmie McCaster, 51, was arrested Sunday and remained in the Leflore County Jail Monday, Deputy Police Chief Marvin Hammond said.

Report of weekend drowning in Yazoo River remains unverified

Leflore County authorities were unable to verify a reported drowning over the weekend in the Yazoo River near Greenwood.
“As of right now, we have received no reports of a body that has been found in the Yazoo River,” Leflore County Sheriff Ricky Banks said Monday.

Business owners worried about delta variant

Some Greenwood restaurant proprietors and retailers have scratched and clawed to rebound after the rocky past year, but Crystal Grill owner Johnny Ballas says he knows that a scary time is on the horizon.
Luckily for Ballas, his business has remained remarkably consistent even throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
