The Greenwood City Council voted Tuesday to appoint new members to four city commissions as well as a new city clerk.
Thomas Gregory and Allison Pillow were appointed to the Greenwood Planning Commission, and Emily Roush Elliott was appointed to the Greenwood Housing Authority.
Amye Hill was named to the Historic Preservation Commission, and Linda Osbourne was named city clerk.
The council unanimously reappointed Carlos Palmer, son of Ward 7’s Carl Palmer, to serve as municipal judge and Paulette Palmer, wife of Carl Palmer, to serve on the Greenwood Housing Authority. Carl Palmer recused himself for those two votes.
In addition, the council unanimously approved the reappointment of the following officials:
- Charlie Swayze III as prosecuting attorney.
- Elizabeth Davis as public defender.
- Don Brock Jr. as city attorney and special prosecutor for housing and other code violations.
- Tony Roberts to the Greenwood Planning Commission.
- Roy Brown to the Greenwood Utilities Commission.
- Will Lott to the Greenwood Housing Authority.
In Mayor Carolyn McAdams mayor report, she mentioned that there was a slight decrease in sales tax allocation for the month of July compared to July 2020.
For the month, the allocation was $436,791, a decrease of $2,148, or less than 1%, from that month a year ago.
McAdams said that the figure did not include what was made from the Bikes, Blues & Bayous event, which was held Aug. 7.
In other business:
- The council voted to accept a grant of about $60,000 to be given to Greenwood-Leflore Airport by the Federal Aviation Administration.
City Attorney Don Brock Jr. explained that it is a non-matching grant that will go toward COVID-19 prevention and safety and cleaning supplies for the airport.
- Kwame Moore spoke to the council about the “Stop the Violence Comedy Show,” which will be held at the Leflore County Civic Center Sept. 3 at 8 p.m. Moore said proceeds from the event will benefit the Boys & Girls Club of the Mississippi Delta, the Greenwood Community and Recreation Center, the Onnie M. Elliott Community Service Center and the Shiloh Seventh-Day Adventist Church youth ministry.
