Vandalism of park equipment in Sidon angers supervisor

Leflore County District 5 Supervisor Robert Collins says he’s frustrated over the destruction of some park equipment earlier this week.

Collins said he recently discovered vandals had at some time wrecked county property at Sidon Park. He said the park was one of his first projects he pursued when he took office.

CIS, artists prepare ‘cocoon’

A small pile of willow branches stacked near the public boat launch is just the beginning of an unusual art project being constructed in Greenwood.

A team from Communities in Schools (CIS) and local artists have begun the first phase of constructing a 26-foot “cocoon” made up of local materials.

Superintendent Margie Pulley leads the Tuesday meeting of the Greeenwood Public Schools Board of Trustees. Pulley was recently recognized as Superintendent of the Year by the Delta Area Association for Improvement of Schools.

Pulley defends performance of city schools

Greenwood School Superintendent Margie Pulley told the school board that many people are working hard to reduce the district’s dropout rate.

Data released last week by the state showed last year’s dropout rate was 39.4 percent, the second-highest in the state. The statewide rate was less than 17 percent.

Jeffrey Nickson donated 20 pairs of Nike Air Jordans to the Greenwood Salvation Army on Saturday. He said that it was hard to separate himself from his favorite shoes, but he felt good to give to people who were in need.

It’s not often a person donates more than $3,000 worth of favorite apparel, and a Greenwood man said it was especially difficult to give up his Air Jordans.

Jeffrey Nickson, who works at Hickok Electronics, said he loved all 23 pairs of his Air Jordans, but as of Saturday afternoon he only has three pairs left.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
