USM official gets update on cancer network

A new administrator at the University of Southern Mississippi stopped in Greenwood on Thursday to learn more about the Mississippi Deep South Network for Cancer Control.

Denis Wiesenburg, the university’s vice president of research, came for a presentation about the cancer network, a program of USM.

City pays for plant equipment

The City of Greenwood is helping make up for a shortfall in grant funds on a project for Milwaukee Electric Tool Corp.

At a special meeting Wednesday, the City Council voted unanimously to fill a gap of about $14,000 for an air compressor worth about $189,000.

Milwaukee Tool is operating from a city-owned building.

‘Fuzz’ hailed as blues legend

Renowned blues bassist Calvin “Fuzz” Jones, a Greenwood native, was remembered on Tuesday for his enthusiasm as well as his musical ability.

Mr. Jones, 84, died of complications from lung cancer Monday at Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto in Southaven.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
