5th fire occurs at oil mill

Frequent fires at Delta Oil Mill are at least keeping the Greenwood Fire Department well-practiced.

Firefighters put out the fifth blaze there in a little more than two weeks Tuesday night.

They responded just after 8 p.m. and used 4,500 gallons to extinguish the blaze.

Oil mill worker dies

A Delta Oil Mill worker severely burned in a grain explosion June 27 died early this morning at a Georgia burn center, according to Leflore County Coroner Debra Sanders.

Kendall Jasper died while being treated at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital in Augusta, Ga.

‘Help’ release shifts to Aug. 10

City police arrest supervisor’s wife

Greenwood police arrested the wife of a Leflore County supervisor Friday afternoon and charged her with simple assault related to a June 8 incident following a Greenwood Voters League meeting.

Jackie Ratliff, 51, 1933 Bradford Ave., was released on her own recognizance.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
