Crop duster pilot dies in crash

A crop duster pilot was killed this morning in a crash in a remote field near Leflore County Road 549, Leflore County Sheriff Ricky Banks said.

The crash site is near Minter City.

The sheriff said the pilot has been identified as Gene McCreary, 60, 22 Shivers Road, Cleveland.

Man faces charge in assault on 6-year-old

A man has been charged with sexual battery in an April incident involving a 6-year-old girl.

Lamarkus Veal, 23, P.O. Box 1262, was charged Thursday and remained in Leflore County Jail this morning on $500,000 bond.

Man accused in stabbing faces trial

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
