K.K. Henderson Kent, an independent candidate for Leflore County District 5 supervisor, told those assembled at the Greenwood Voters League that she is “not a politician but a businesswoman.”

Kent will face incumbent Robert Collins, also an independent, and Larry “Kite” Johnson, a Democrat, in the Nov. 3 election.

Board hires official to improve status

The Greenwood School Board voted Tuesday evening to hire a Mississippi Student Information System (MSIS) district coordinator in a move to address the district’s probationary status.

The board voted to hire Clydia Boyd after Superintendent Montrell Greene said it could do so while remaining within the district’s budget.

District has plan to regain accreditation

Billy Joe Ferguson, superintendent of the Carroll County School District, said his district is already working on a plan to address its recent accreditation downgrade.

The Carroll County and Greenwood public school districts were both downgraded from accredited to probationary status by a state commission last week.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
