The 76-year-old Greenwood native graduated from Greenwood High School in 1957 before departing for Georgia Tech, where he played football and earned a degree in civil engineering.

Film brings Freeman back home

Oscar winner and former Greenwood resident Morgan Freeman will attend services at Turner Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church on Sunday, Pastor Ray Jackson says.

Freeman will be accompanied by a film crew from National Geographic. The group is visiting in conjunction with a documentary series currently in production.

The grant stipulated that it could not be used for the general operation of the United Way and that its total amount could not be disclosed.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
