The 10 agencies supported by the United Way of Leflore County will share in the benefits of a grant given by an anonymous national donor.
The grant stipulated that it could not be used for the general operation of the United Way and that its total amount could not be disclosed.
Each agency supported by the United Way will receive a check to make up for this year’s decrease in allocation money, as well as tangible goods identified by each director.
“The United Way is thrilled to be able to spend this money on each of our 10 local agencies,” said Courtney Kimmel, executive director of the United Way, in a prepared statement. “They sincerely appreciate everything we are able to do for them, and we are blessed to have the ability to give back to our community.”
The agencies will use the money in the following ways:
• Beacon Harbor will receive new furniture for one resident house.
• The Greenwood Interfaith Ministries Community Kitchen received a Vulcan commercial stove.
• The Heart of the South Girl Scouts will receive new Scout uniforms and Christmas parade uniforms.
• Funding will also be allocated to the Community Food Pantry for the repair of the building’s awning. The pantry will also receive a pallet of vegetables.
• The Fuller Center for Housing will receive an heat/ventilation/air conditioning unit and lumber to build a porch, stairs and underpinning for a small new home to be moved into Baptist Town.
• The Humane Society will receive a washing machine, dog food and assistance with veterinary bills.
• The 4-H Club will receive five laptop computers for its robotics program.
• The Salvation Army will receive keyboards and guitars to give children music lessons.
• The Boy Scouts will receive new uniforms.
A portion of the grant money has been used by the United Way for the purchase of a computer and software for the purpose of tracking donor information.
“We are all very excited to be able to help our agencies with these specific needs and are very grateful for this grant,” said Eric Miller, president of the United Way, in a statement. “I would like to remind everyone that this grant is for specific needs and does not supplement the agencies’ operating expenses, so please continue to give and help the United Way meet our 2015 goal.”
