Longtime teacher ‘very professional’

Hundreds of Leflore County students learned the craft of carpentry under the expert guidance of Andrew Weddington.

He was a vocational teacher for R.B. Schlater High School in Morgan City and then Amanda Elzy High School in Greenwood from 1955 to 1989.

Greenwood Leflore Hospital’s newly opened Walk- In Clinic provides a daytime alternative to the Emergency Room.

“I definitely think there’s a need for it. There’s a lot of people out there who have nowhere to go other than the ER,” said Heather Wilkey, the clinic’s nurse practitioner.

The annual compilation of Greenwood’s good news is included in today’s newspaper. Home-delivery subscribers will get it with their papers, and it’s also available at newsstands for $1.25.

Woman says NAACP kicked her out

Pride filled Natesha Renee Oliver when she joined the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in December.

She said she wanted to make a difference in Greenwood’s troubled black communities, especially with youth, and believed the storied civil rights organization would be a way to contribute.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
