Greenwood school board President Barbara Gray, left, congratulates Birdette Hughey as the district’s teacher of the year Tuesday. Hughey, who’s in her second-year as part of Teach for America, teaches algebra at Greenwood High School. Superintendent Margie Pulley said algebra scores continue to soar and that Hughey’s classroom is named “Greenwood University.” Hughey’s name has been submitted as a candidate for state teacher of the year. Even though Hughey’s TFA commitment ends after this year, Pulley said Hughey has promised to stay with the district.
