Weekend brawls land 2 men in jail

Two separate scuffles over the weekend in Greenwood landed two men in the Leflore County Jail, where both remained this morning.

Jesse L.D. Johnson, 34, 4522 S. Drexel Blvd., Chicago, was charged with aggravated assault after allegedly stabbing a man during an early morning argument Friday.

Itta Bena man shot to death

An Itta Bena man was shot to death Monday night shortly before 9 p.m.

Michael Rosa, 503 Main St., Itta Bena, died of gunshot wounds, Leflore County Coroner Debra Sanders said. Rosa’s age was not immediately available.

Sanders said Rosa’s body had been sent to Jackson for an autopsy.

State auditors checking federal programs

Auditors from the Mississippi Department of Education are back at the offices of the Greenwood Public Schools.

This time, auditors will be looking at federal programs in the district, according to Department of Education spokeswoman Patrice Guilfoyle.

An Itta Bena man was shot to death in his home Monday night, apparently after answering his front door.

Michael Wayne Rosa, 42, 503 Main St., died in his home Monday night from his wounds, Leflore County Coroner Debra Sanders said.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
