Auditors from the Mississippi Department of Education are back at the offices of the Greenwood Public Schools.
This time, auditors will be looking at federal programs in the district, according to Department of Education spokeswoman Patrice Guilfoyle.
Guilfoyle said this is a follow-up to an earlier round of inspections, completed at the beginning of this month.
Superintendent Montrell Greene said the auditors arrived on Monday but didn’t say how long they would be staying.
“They’re here gathering more information as an extension of the earlier audit,” he said. “I can’t say for sure why they’re here now as opposed to earlier.”
During their previous visit, state auditors checked paperwork, inspected facilities and observed classes over three days.
The initial audit was random and was not prompted by concerns or complaints about the district, according to Guilfoyle.
Guilfoyle declined to say what prompted the follow-up visit or whether auditors had looked at the district’s federal programs during their initial visit.
“Once the audit is complete and the report filed, then all of that will be public,” Guilfoyle said.
Guilfoyle said she wasn’t sure when the final audit report would be released. Previously, she said that reports are generally available within 30 days of the completion of the audit and are available to the public.
Greene said he wasn’t sure if auditors had looked at the federal programs during their first visit to the district.
“We look to get whatever feedback they have for us at the appropriate time,” he said.
