Two separate scuffles over the weekend in Greenwood landed two men in the Leflore County Jail, where both remained this morning.
Jesse L.D. Johnson, 34, 4522 S. Drexel Blvd., Chicago, was charged with aggravated assault after allegedly stabbing a man during an early morning argument Friday.
In an unrelated case, Willie Swinney, 21, 302 Grand Ave., wound up being charged with two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer and with malicious mischief after fighting two officers who attempted to arrest him on a pair of outstanding warrants.
Johnson was arrested shortly after 2 a.m. on Friday after getting in an argument with Johnnie Lee Braxton.
According to Police Chief Ray Moore, Johnson cut across Braxton’s lawn at 1001 Roosevelt Ave.
The two became involved in an argument — apparently, Moore said, over Johnson walking through the yard — when the incident turned violent.
Moore said Johnson is accused of cutting the 56-year-old Braxton several times in the face and hand. Bond for Johnson was set at $20,000.
In a separate incident, Greenwood police wound up in a Sunday afternoon scuffle after spotting Willie Swinney, who had outstanding arrest warrants for simple assault and contempt of court, on the street.
As officers attempted to place Swinney under arrest, he began struggling, Moore said.
“Once they got him in the patrol car, he kicked out the back glass of the patrol car and tried to escape,” Moore said.
As officers tried to corral him, Swinney allegedly head-butted one officer in the face and kicked the other in the groin.
Bail on all five charges against Swinney — the original warrants as well as two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer and a charge of malicious mischief for kicking out the window — has been set at $11,500.
