Tchula to receive grant for municipal park

TCHULA - The municipal park in this small Delta town was expected to get a $155,000 boost this morning from the Mississippi Transportation Commission.

"It's part of what they call a highway enhancement grant," said Tchula Mayor Von Brown.

Teen charged with stealing murder victim's car

A second teenager has been arrested in connection with the burglary of the home of a Greenwood homicide victim.

On Thursday, police charged Albert M. Jones, 17, 210 Barrentine St., as an adult with grand larceny auto and burglary of an occupied dwelling.

Teen charged with capital murder

A Greenwood teen has been charged as an adult with capital murder in the fatal shooting of Greenwood resident James Smith.

Willie James Kinds, 15, of 307 Rear Broad St., remained in Leflore County Jail this morning.

The youth is also facing charges of armed robbery and two counts of grand larceny in the Smith case.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
