Improvements to Mississippi must come from the local level with people in communities supporting one another, said Jackson Mayor John Horhn.
“We have to get our house in order at the local level,” Horhn told the audience at Thursday’s Beans and Greens Dinner.

MSU to host high school football title games

High school football state championships are coming to Mississippi State University.
The Mississippi High School Activities Association announced on Wednesday that all of the 2025 state championship football games will be played in Starkville at Davis Wade Stadium, ending a nine-year hosting drought.

Greenwood High School junior linebacker/safety Frederrick Ford received his second offer from a school in the Southeastern Conference Tuesday morning when Mississippi State University was on campus to invite him to join their program when he’s done at GHS.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
