Pillow Academy Girls Soccer: Lady ’Stangs have sights set on fifth in a row

They begin their quest for a fifth straight state soccer crown Tuesday, when they open up at home against longtime rival Washington School. They have compiled a 56-9-4 record during this historic championship run.

Prep Baseball: Carroll riding high; GHS wins

The Carroll Academy baseball team pulled off a doubleheader sweep of visiting Delta Academy and J.Z. George Thursday in Carrollton.
The Rebels (4-1) defeated Delta 12-0 in four innings in the first contest Thursday, outhitting the Raiders 7-2 and taking advantage of three defensive errors.

School districts’ graduation rates improving

The graduation and dropout rates for all four of the public high schools in Leflore and Carroll counties have improved, according to data from the Mississippi Department of Education.
The rates for the Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School District and Carroll County School District have also surpassed the state’s average.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
