The Greenwood Fire Department works to extinguish a fire at a home on the 100 block of Longino Street early Monday morning. The fire ultimately rendered the residence unlivable, but the two residents reported to have lived there were not harmed.

House fire: Residence now unlivable; no injuries

A fire early Monday morning has rendered a Greenwood residence unlivable after a resident was reported to have used a propane tank to heat the inside of the home.
This accident only strengthens the case for the city’s need and current deployment of two warming stations, Fire Marshal Charles Cooley said.

Saturday bazaar to offer variety of craft items

A holiday bazaar set for Saturday will bring local artisans, unique crafts and seasonal cheer together in downtown Greenwood.
The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Old City Hall, 121 Main St.
Around 36 vendors from Greenwood and surrounding Delta cities are expected to attend.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
