Two dead following Christmas Eve shooting

Four people were shot in Greenwood on Christmas Eve, two of them fatally.
Leflore County Coroner Debra Sanders said she received a call at 8:20 p.m. Wednesday in regard to a shooting incident on the 300 block of East Market Street.

Marchand’s exit near; hospital looking for successor

Greenwood Leflore Hospital is still looking for a new CEO, as interim CEO Gary Marchand is set to retire at the end of this month.
At its December meeting, held Monday, the hospital board took no action on the CEO search, according to Marchand. However, the hospital will continue to operate as normal.

Dilapidated structures to be torn down

Youths get tips from police; families receive free hams

Jerusalem Church of God in Christ looked to give a boost to its neighbors and youth this weekend with a ham giveaway and a guest speaker from the Greenwood Police Department.
On Saturday, the church conducted its annual Christmas ham giveaway for residents on Broad Street.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
