Ground to be broken Jan. 23 on new school

The Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School District has scheduled the groundbreaking ceremony for its new high school for Jan. 23.
The ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. and will be held at the location of the new school, which is on 16th Section land along Cypress Avenue.

Leflore County jobless rate rises to 6.4% in Nov.

Leflore County’s unemployment rate was 6.4% in November, according to figures released Friday by the Mississippi Department of Employment Security.
The collection of data for November was delayed due to the federal government shutdown that lasted from Oct. 1 to Nov. 12.

Singers needed for MLK Day prayer breakfast

A small group of singers is being assembled for the upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. Day unity prayer breakfast, and volunteers are needed.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
