Viking Half Marathon, 10K And 5K: About 170 have registered for Saturday races

The routes for this Saturday’s Viking Half Marathon, 10K and 5K have been revamped to bring variety and an improved experience for participants.
All races for the 14th annual event will begin and end at 101 W. Front St., instead of the usual starting point in front of the Leflore County Courthouse.

Cotesworth fundraiser on March 29 will showcase Scottish, Irish heritage

The first Cotesworth Celtic Gathering will be an event for the community to learn more about Scottish and Irish heritage while having fun together, says the event’s committee chair, Mary “Punkie” Stewart.
“It’s just going to be unbelievable, if everybody will just come on out and give us a chance to show them a good time,” Stewart said.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
